We Can Make a Difference

Spay in the CityYou have probably seen them – the stray, starving animals roaming the streets of Memphis. In recent months you may have seen the stories on the news reporting about the problems that continue to plague our local & national animal shelters. You might have even heard about the excessively high number of animals that are dumped at the Memphis Animal Shelter every year, and the number of innocent cats & dogs that are put to sleep due to the increasingly high intake of abandoned and unwanted animals. The simple facts are that the number of strays picked up and the numbers of animals being relinquished to MAS are higher in certain Memphis neighborhoods.

Spay in the City believes that an aggressive, community-based spay/neuter plan is the answer!

We are: City organizations, community leaders, local agencies, volunteers and community residents working together to make a difference.

We need: Community Support ~ Support from all Animal Control agencies ~ Support from our Community Leaders ~ Support from local Veterinarians

Purpose:

  • To unite all concerned citizens to promote and support a Community Spay / Neuter / Vaccinate Initiative.
  • To provide spay, neuter and vaccination services to a community and reduce the number of unwanted litters.

Goals:

  • To spay, neuter and vaccinate cats and dogs.
  • Reduce the number of cats and dogs euthanized in our shelters.
  • Reduce the number of stray animals running loose on our streets.
  • Reduce the burden on Memphis Animal Services and other shelters and save taxpayer dollars.

We can work together for our companion animals!  Join us in working for a better Memphis!

Spay in the City January Meeting
Thursday, January 19th
6:30-8:00

Benjamin L. Hooks Library
3030 Poplar Ave, Memphis TN

Spay in the City has so much to be thankful for in 2011. We are grateful to the fantastic veterinarians who gave and continue to give us the most valuable part of our program, spays and neuters. These compassionate and caring veterinarians are the heart beat of our program. Thank you: Dr. Oleson, Dr. Limbaugh, Dr. Healy, Dr. Vawter, and Dr. Shaw. We look forward to your continuing support in 2012. Aiso a big thank you to the volunteers. It takes a crew to get through the surgery days and each of you has gone above and beyond showing your dedication to the program. Every surgery day is exhausting but at the end of the day we realize what we are doing..it is a fantastic feeling.
Hope everyone had a very Merry Holiday and the New Year brings Good Health, Happiness, Love and Prosperity to all. Spay in the City has received a wonderful gift for the New Year and with this gift comes a greater opportunity to achieve our goal of reducing the number of unwanted cats and dogs and assisting qualifying pet owners. Our next meeting is Thursday Jan 19th at the Benjamin L. Hooks Library on Poplar 6:30-8:00. Join us to hear about the gift Spay in the City has received and our plans for a better community for the animals in Shelby County. Please invite your friends to the meeting and let us celebrate together the exciting Gift.
See you at the meeting….gail

Spay in the City’s Goals for 2012

Spay in the City is now an official program of the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County!

2011 was a great year for Spay in the City. We made huge strides from 2010, and can’t wait to do more in 2012!

Since our first Spay Day on May 1, 2010, Spay in the City has spayed/neutered 237 pets for eligible, responsible pet owners. 190 of those surgeries were completed over 10 Spay Days in 2011!

These figures do not include referrals we helped coordinate with Midsouth Spay/Neuter Services and the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby’s $50.00 voucher program. The Spay in the City program works with all possible agencies and available resources to assist qualifying pet owners.

Our GOALS for 2012

*Increase number of spays & neuters from 2011

*Continue to partner with communities to address pet overpopulation in specific neighborhoods

*Bring CAIT (Companion Animal Initiative of TN) to Memphis to help address feral cat colonies

*Special Spay Days to include: Feral Cats & Pit Bulls
